Trustee Administrative Assistant

Gabrielle Thurman began her career in medical education at St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the formation of the Tulsa Medical Education Foundation (TMEF).  The foundation consisted of five hospitals supporting, directing and funding five residency programs (Internal Medicine, Surgery, OB-GYN, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine) to address the growing indigent healthcare issues in the eastern part of the state.  She served as the original director for the Foundation as well as the five individual foundations that made up the umbrella organization, TMEF.  She worked with and served as a liaison for hospital administrators and staff, practicing/teaching physicians in the community, and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences administration to facilitate the development of the new programs. Her responsibilities included payroll for residents, scheduling rotations at individual hospitals, attendance and recording minutes at foundation meetings, organizing and participating in resident recruitment trips, and administration of the matching program.

When the Health Science Center established a satellite campus in Tulsa for 3rd and 4th-year medical student rotations, they joined and eventually assumed responsibility for the existing resident programs integrating the medical student program with the existing residency programs.  Her responsibilities continued and grew as she became the liaison between the hospitals, residents, and the University.  In addition, she was asked to organize a continuing medical education program for practicing physicians in the eastern part of the state.  The program provided educational programs with continuing education credits arranged and sponsored by the University to physicians in rural areas relatively close to their practices.  As the program grew, it spread throughout the entire state.

She left the University to attend graduate school to complete her graduate degree and be certified to teach.  Upon completion of her graduate studies, she taught at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City Campus, Oklahoma City Community College, and St. Gregory’s College.  

While living in the Caribbean she taught History of Medicine, proctored the NBME shelf exams, directed and monitored the Kaplan Review Course, and administered the USMLE Step 1 practice exam provided by Kaplan at the end of the course.

Currently, she is the administrative assistant at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences-St. Kitts, Board of Trustees.  Her responsibilities include administrative support to the Trustees and liaison with administration and staff.
