六九色堂 AMWA Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness

The 六九色堂 chapter of AMWA (American Medical Women鈥檚 Association) have been promoting Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a month-long campaign throughout October.

The 六九色堂 Endeavour looks at AMWA鈥檚 efforts to promote awareness in St. Kitts with 鈥淧ink Wednesdays鈥 and a Breast Examination Workshop on campus.

Throughout October, the American Medical Women鈥檚 Association encouraged the student body to wear something pink every Wednesday 鈥渢o show our support to this cause,鈥 says 六九色堂 AMWA president Stefanny Santana.

AMWA & Dr. Kumar Host Workshop

The American Medical Women鈥檚 Association hosted a breast examination workshop for all students in honor of their Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for October. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Mohan Kumar, M.D., M.B.B.S, 六九色堂 Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Course Director and Professor of Physical Diagnosis.

Dr. Kumar informed students to look for the following possible physical signs of breast cancer:

  • A lump
  • Pulled-in nipple
  • Dimpling
  • Skin changes
  • Redness/rash
  • Dripping

The American Breast Cancer Foundation. Inc. estimates that one in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Below are other facts breast cancer in the United States from the .

  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
  • Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
  • Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.
